About the Opportunity

Saudi Aramco is seeking a Techno-economic Modeling Specialist to join its Technology Strategy & Planning Department (TSPD). TSPD provides leadership and support across the technology life-cycle, from strategy setting to value realization and sustainable growth. The department collaborates with corporate and business stakeholders to integrate new technologies into the company’s strategies and investment plans. This is a full-time role focused on strategic technology management.

Role Purpose and Contribution

The Techno-economic Modeling Specialist plays a vital part in advancing enhanced technology management processes across Saudi Aramco. This position supports techno-economic evaluation and strategic decision-making within the technology organization. The specialist enables optimal value realization from technology by providing accurate, timely, and detailed analysis of economic, financial, and commercial data related to technology development, demonstration, and deployment opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support strategic option analysis and inform product development strategies through cost-benefit assessments, measurable business value drivers, data-driven analysis, product analytics, and validation of economic and risk assumptions in decision-making processes. Present findings and recommendations to senior management.
  • Analyze trends and market intelligence to support the development of business cases and value hypotheses for technology projects progressing through the corporate technology stage-gate process.
  • Create financial models and establish the value of technologies for potential commercial applications, supporting technology development, deployment, and external licensing efforts.
  • Support technology project teams in developing robust financial cases for internally developed technologies, including techno-economic models for investment appraisal in the stage-gate process.
  • Provide detailed financial and economic insights for evaluating technology project performance by analyzing relevant data against key performance measures.
  • Support technology development, demonstration, internal deployment, and external commercialization opportunities, including the implementation of robust deployment plans. This involves tracking and accurately reporting the value realized from deployed technologies, and supporting internal and external reviews of relevant financials.
  • Provide input to evaluate licensing opportunities to enable favorable license terms.
  • Develop, manage, and assure the quality of economic modeling tools used within the Technology Organization (TOC).
  • Periodically review and improve financial models, maintain, and update the repository of licenses and portfolio position on all approved technology/innovation applications.
  • Work flexibly across TOC and/or R&D domains as required.
  • Share and transfer techno-economic evaluation fundamentals knowledge to increase financial acumen within the organization.

Essential Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Software, Material, Mechanical, etc.), Statistics, Data Analytics, Economics, Econometrics, Business Administration, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • An advanced degree or financial certification (MBA/Finance/CFA) is highly preferred.
  • A minimum of 13 years of professional experience is required, which must include:
    • At least 5 years in leading organizations within the energy or chemicals sector, and/or with leading management consulting firm(s).
    • At least 5 years conducting incremental, cost-benefit/effectiveness, commercial deal structuring, and budget impact analyses for decision making. This experience should involve utilizing mathematical, economic, or statistical modeling tools and techniques such as decision tree analysis, Markov modeling, discrete event simulations (including Monte Carlo simulations), real options, risk adjustment, and risk management.

Required Skills and Expertise

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and understanding of one or more relevant core businesses (downstream refining, petrochemicals, midstream, and upstream) and emerging technologies related to corporate sustainability (Artificial intelligence, Predictive/Data analytics, Software development, industrial sensoring and monitoring; nonmetallic/advanced materials and sustainable plastics, Circular carbon economy, CO2 capture, utilization and storage).
  • Ability to develop insights for quantitative decision making, from market research to technology business case development.
  • Mastery in quantitative economic and financial analysis, portfolio modeling, and technology valuation, including incremental, risk-adjusted, cost-benefit, variance, and scenario analyses, Net Present Value (NPV), and sensitivity analysis.
  • Proficiency in a range of tools and applications such as Microsoft Excel, Power-Bi, SQL, SAS, R, MatLab, Tableau, and/or other VBA type software for analyzing complex and large data sets. Experience with Planisware or similar tools for portfolio and project management is also required.

The role requires working flexibly across various Technology Organization (TOC) and/or Research & Development (R&D) domains as needed. A commitment to sharing and transferring techno-economic evaluation fundamentals knowledge is essential to enhance financial acumen across the organization.
