About the Role

Compass Project Consulting is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to support the commercial management and delivery of a major construction project. This is a full-time position requiring a strong post-contract background and proven ability to independently manage commercial responsibilities throughout the construction phase.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Quantity Surveyor will be responsible for a range of post-contract quantity surveying and commercial activities. This includes independently managing all commercial aspects, reviewing and assessing variation orders, change requests, and contractual claims. The role involves preparing and maintaining accurate cost reports, forecasts, cash flows, and monthly commercial reports, while monitoring project costs against approved budgets and identifying potential risks and opportunities. Providing commercial advice to project teams and client representatives is also a key function. Furthermore, the position entails managing interim valuations, payment applications, and final account negotiations, as well as reviewing contractor submissions and assessing the commercial implications of project changes. Identifying, assessing, and reporting commercial risks with mitigation strategies, supporting contract administration, and maintaining commercial records are essential duties. The role also requires participation in project meetings, providing commercial input to support project delivery, and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and reporting requirements. Support for procurement activities and subcontractor commercial management may also be required.

Candidate Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 10–15 years of experience in Quantity Surveying, with a significant focus on post-contract commercial management.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage commercial and contractual responsibilities on major construction projects.
  • Proven experience in assessing and evaluating variation orders, claims, and change management processes.
  • Experience in preparing monthly commercial reports, cost forecasts, and financial performance reports.
  • Strong knowledge of cost management, contract administration, and commercial controls.
  • Experience in identifying, assessing, and managing commercial risks.
  • Familiarity with modular construction, off-site manufacturing, or modern methods of construction is preferred.
  • A strong understanding of FIDIC and other standard forms of contract.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and commercial management systems.
  • Professional membership with RICS, CIArb, or an equivalent qualification is advantageous.
