Job Description

About the Role

National Medical Care is seeking a full-time CSSD Technician to join their team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This role is responsible for processing reusable medical items through decontamination, sorting, wrapping, sterilization, distribution, and storage procedures. The technician will perform routine technical tasks within the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) to ensure the production and delivery of safe instruments, supplies, and equipment for patient care, working under the direction of the CSSD Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect or receive contaminated instruments and equipment from all hospital areas, logging items upon receipt.
  • Perform routine decontamination procedures, including sorting and thoroughly cleaning surgical instruments and equipment according to manufacturers' instructions and established guidelines for effective bio-burden removal.
  • Inspect instrumentation for surface corrosion and test for working condition.
  • Assemble and package basic instrument sets and routine procedural trays using the Operating Manual and AAMI recommended materials and techniques.
  • Load and unload sterilizer chambers without compromising package integrity, adhering to Operating Manual procedures and AAMI standards.
  • Report any missing items and assist in completing OVR reports where appropriate.
  • Recommend instruments for condemnation and replacement to the CSSD Manager and Area Manager.
  • Soft wrap and sterilize medical instruments and equipment.
  • Check all sterilizers for correct functionality using Bowie-Dick and biological testing.
  • Inspect and de-lint freshly laundered linen when received, then fold and assemble basic linen items.
  • Transport single-use supplies and sterile items to patient treatment areas according to Infection Control Policy and Operating Manual procedures.
  • Answer requests from the Operating Room and receive and clean utility pans and basins from patient care areas.
  • Assist in checking supply levels and delivery areas.

Professional Conduct and Teamwork

  • Practice in a client-centered manner, reinforcing the hospital's commitment to excellent care, respect, friendly communication, and professional behavior.
  • Promote a positive image of nursing and the hospital to patients, families, and visitors, taking immediate action to resolve any negative impressions or complaints.
  • Work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary, multicultural team, using only English or Arabic when outside the CSSD unit.
  • Assume responsibility for own actions, adhere to the dress code, and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Maintain all aspects of confidentiality and accept constructive criticism positively.
  • Follow the correct chain of command for requests or for conflict resolution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CSSD Manager and Area Manager.

Operational Management and Safety

  • Understand procedures and required safety precautions prior to job performance.
  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment for each job assignment.
  • Use standard safety precautions when working with bio-hazardous materials, toxic chemicals, steam, gas, dry heat, and plasma sterilization equipment.
  • Check inventory on CSSD shelves, order supplies from bulk store, and restock shelves.
  • Inspect stored, sterile packaged products for stock rotation and event-related shelf life.
  • Receive and record supplies, new equipment, and instruments for processing.
  • Monitor and replenish solutions in metered dispensing washers, ultrasonic units, and other automated cleaning equipment.
  • Ensure that sterilizers and machines are functioning properly according to operating manuals.

Quality Assurance and Development

  • Support and uphold the philosophy, vision, mission, and objectives of the nursing department and hospital.
  • Comply with the standards laid down by JCIA, ARAMCO, and CBAHI, performing duties necessary to support and achieve accreditation.
  • Know the Key Performance Indicators for the area and strive to improve them.
  • Inform the CSSD Manager or Area Manager of any complaints, incidents, or accidents.
  • Be aware of and follow all Riyadh National Hospital Policies and Procedures related to all tasks performed.
  • Manage time effectively to achieve work objectives, ensuring punctuality and efficient, accurate work.
  • Attend in-service and training classes as required, and assist with the orientation of new employees.
  • Maintain and improve practice through self-study, identifying own learning needs, and seeking educational opportunities to remain current in CSSD-related topics.
  • Manage resources in a cost-effective way.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 0-1 years of experience in a related field.
  • Ability to pass Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and cooperatively while consistently following hospital policies and procedures.
