About the Role

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH) in Riyadh is seeking a Genetic Counsellor Molecular Diagnostics to join its team. This full-time position involves providing essential genetic assessment and counselling services to individuals and families. The role focuses on supporting those with a medical history of, or at increased risk of having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition, as well as individuals at risk for a genetic disorder themselves.

Role Purpose and Scope

The Genetic Counsellor plays a critical role in guiding patients and families through complex genetic information. This involves comprehensive assessment, empathetic counselling, and the development of care plans in collaboration with clinical geneticists. The position requires a nuanced understanding of medical histories, investigation results, and the ethical considerations surrounding genetic information and testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Obtain and analyze medical histories, investigation results, and consultations, considering sociocultural, psychodynamic, and ethical issues.
  • Provide empathetic, non-directive prenatal, paediatric, and general genetic counselling regarding diagnosis, natural history, mode of inheritance, care plans, genetic testing options, and alternative solutions.
  • Inform and counsel patients and families while upholding ethical standards of privacy and confidentiality.
  • Calculate risks, such as recurrence or presymptomatic diagnostic risk, by integrating medical and family history, genetic testing availability, and relevant test results into appropriate statistical methodologies (*, Bayesian analysis).
  • Order appropriate laboratory tests under the supervision of a Senior Genetic Counsellor.
  • Critically appraise published and unpublished data on testing options for specific disorders and integrate this appraisal into counselling and follow-up plans.
  • Develop genetic assessment and counselling care plans in collaboration with the clinical geneticist and the patient.
  • Assess individuals'/families' comprehension of information provided during counselling and its integration into their decision-making process, scheduling follow-up sessions as needed.
  • Address issues of loss and bereavement to assist families in adjusting to a disorder in an affected member or the risk of its recurrence.
  • Provide written consultation summary letters to physicians, healthcare providers, and patients/families, along with referral letters to consultative services.
  • Develop standard counselling letters for various genetic disorders.
  • Adhere to all Hospital's related Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in self and others' education, training, and development, as applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Current Registration from country of origin and Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) is required.
  • A Pulse Diploma is required.
  • Experience required: 0-1 year.
