Job Description

About SYSTRA

SYSTRA is a global engineering and consultancy group specializing in public transport and sustainable mobility. With over 10,300 employees, SYSTRA designs safe and sustainable transport solutions to enhance social inclusion and facilitate access to employment, education, and leisure worldwide. For 65 years, SYSTRA has supported cities and regions in developing, improving, and modernizing their infrastructure and transport systems across project lifecycles, from design to deployment and maintenance. The company operates in over 80 countries, with 74% of its turnover generated internationally, and supports clients in their digital, ecological, and energy transitions.

Role Overview

SYSTRA is seeking a seasoned Transportation Engineer with extensive macroscopic and microscopic modeling experience to lead traffic and mobility studies in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. This full-time role requires over 10 years of experience and involves guiding end-to-end modeling workflows, translating technical outputs into actionable recommendations, and supporting planning, design, and operational decision-making for public and private sector clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, calibration, and validation of multi-scale traffic models, including PTV VISUM for strategic demand and network assignments, and PTV VISSIM for detailed operational simulations and microsimulation of corridors, junctions, and transit priority schemes. Establish modeling methodologies, QA/QC protocols, and scenario frameworks aligned with local standards and international best practices.
  • Define data requirements and oversee data collection plans (counts, OD matrices, GPS/FCD, AVL/APC, signal timing, travel times). Process and reconcile multi-source datasets, develop base year models, and apply rigorous calibration and validation procedures using KPIs such as GEH, V/C, delay, and travel time reliability.
  • Build and assess scenarios covering masterplans, land-use changes, network enhancements, transit priority, ITS strategies, demand management, and construction traffic management. Evaluate performance using LOS, queues, person-throughput, emissions/energy proxies, and reliability metrics; generate clear, decision-ready insights and mitigation strategies.
  • Interface with roadway and transit design teams to test geometric alternatives, signal control strategies (fixed-time, actuated, adaptive), bus priority, and multimodal operations. Prepare signal timing plans, coordinate with control center and authority stakeholders, and support temporary traffic management and staging plans.
  • Engage with client authorities, developers, and multidisciplinary teams to define objectives, present findings, and secure approvals. Produce high-quality technical reports, executive summaries, and visualizations that convey complex modeling results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Apply KSA/GCC authority guidelines and international references (HCM, ITE, MUTCD, PIARC) where applicable. Contribute to internal standards, templates, and knowledge sharing. Mentor junior modelers and engineers, review deliverables, and promote continuous improvement.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Over 10 years of professional experience in transportation planning/traffic engineering with a strong modeling focus.
  • Proven, hands-on expertise in PTV VISUM (strategic/macroscopic) and PTV VISSIM (microscopic), including calibration, validation, and scripting/customization.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering studies in Saudi Arabia or the GCC, with familiarity in local authority processes and approvals.
  • Advanced proficiency in VISUM and VISSIM, including network coding, demand modeling, signal control, transit modeling, and queue/spillback analysis.
  • Working knowledge of related tools such as SIDRA, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, or Aimsun (desirable).
  • Scripting and automation for modeling workflows using Python, COM/.NET APIs for PTV tools, and data processing with GIS (ArcGIS Pro) and Spatial SQL.
  • Strong command of traffic engineering principles: capacity analysis, LOS, signal operations, roundabout analysis, safety fundamentals, and multimodal integration.
  • Experience with data pipelines: surveys, Bluetooth/FCD, OD estimation, matrix estimation, and sensor integration.
  • Experience in projects involving master planning, corridor studies, interchange/junction design, BRT/LRT/metro interface assessments, and work zone planning.
  • Exposure to ITS planning, adaptive signal control, and operations analytics using control center data.
  • Familiarity with emissions and sustainability impact assessment methods and KPIs.
