Consultant Intensive Care

About the Role

National Medical Care is seeking a Consultant Intensive Care to provide high-level professional care for patients in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time role involves maintaining professional performance in accordance with evidenced-based medicine, medical ethics, JCIA standards, hospital by-laws, and Ministry of Health regulations. The Consultant will also provide effective leadership within the department, focusing on quality improvement in intensive care.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide patient care for both in-patients and out-patients, including those in the Intensive Care Unit, within the scope of clinical privileges.
• Conduct regular ward rounds independently or as part of a team to formulate multi-disciplinary treatment plans.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relevant to the specialty.
• Assess and refer patients to appropriate medical facilities and accept referrals for medical problems within the specialty.
• Participate in the departmental on-call rota for patient care and admissions.
• Respond to emergencies, offering advice and active participation as required by the specialty.
• Maintain appropriate and timely medical records, ensuring accuracy and legibility.
• Supervise assigned junior staff and provide leadership for performance improvement functions.
• Actively participate in Continued Medical Education activities, including hospital educational events and national/international conferences.
• Contribute to training programs for junior medical staff, nursing staff, and technicians.
• Educate patients and families regarding their care needs, involving them in the plan of care and respecting their choices.

Intensive Care Subspecialty Duties

• Be available for emergency consultations and accept referrals related to the subspecialty.
• Actively participate in daily unit management activities for efficient delivery of ICU services, including triage, bed allocation, and discharge planning.
• Conduct regular ICU rounds with the team, seeing patients at least twice daily or as acuity requires.
• Investigate and manage patients with medical problems related to the subspecialty, performing invasive and non-invasive procedures as indicated.
• Perform critical care procedures such as endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, placement of intravascular catheters (arterial, central venous, pulmonary artery), cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and tube thoracostomy.
• Serve as a team leader within the ICU, integrating and utilizing care for patients with complex illnesses or injuries, including multi-system failure.

Qualifications and Experience

• A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in Intensive Care.
• Demonstrated professional competence within the parameters of clinical privileges.
• Commitment to continuous medical education and professional development.
• Ability to uphold patient rights of security, confidentiality, and privacy.

Reporting and Collaboration

The Consultant Intensive Care reports to the Head of Department. This role involves liaison with consultants of the same and other specialties, nursing staff, respiratory therapy, and other healthcare professionals, as well as patients and their families. The Consultant will supervise Senior Registrars, Registrars, Residents, Respiratory Therapy, Nurses, and other assigned paramedical staff.
