About AstraZeneca and the Medical Science Liaison Role

We are seeking a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) V&I to join our team in a full-time, field-based role covering assigned territories within the Makkah region, including Jeddah and Makkah.

Role Purpose and Scope

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) V&I is a field-based Medical Affairs position requiring travel across assigned territories in Saudi Arabia. This role involves applying extensive scientific expertise within a specific therapeutic area to engage in scientific discussions and presentations with Key External Experts (KEEs) regarding disease areas and clinical data. The context of these interactions is strictly non-promotional. The MSL is accountable for generating actionable insights from KEEs and communicating these to the brand team to inform Medical and Brand strategy. This position involves strategic work with external stakeholders to foster scientific and strategic partnerships within major hospitals, institutions, and non-traditional stakeholders such as policy makers and payer groups, aiming to provide health system solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, prioritize, and expand Key External Experts (KEEs), including non-traditional stakeholders, based on scientific expertise and influence within specific institutions.
  • Engage in scientific discussions and medical advancements in a balanced, objective, and accurate manner.
  • Provide AstraZeneca with insights into the local medical community, clinical practice trends, and perceived gaps in scientific knowledge and disease management.
  • Foster scientific partnerships with KEEs to advance disease understanding and promote evidence-based changes in medical practice consistent with Medical Affairs strategy.
  • Support evidence generation in the region and facilitate continuing medical education events for healthcare professionals (HCPs).
  • Collect and share actionable insights with internal stakeholders to enhance the value and appropriate use of AstraZeneca products.
  • Organize and facilitate scientific events with healthcare institutions and their multidisciplinary teams related to the therapeutic area.
  • Demonstrate and continuously update expertise in AstraZeneca products, emerging therapies, competitors, and clinical trials within the disease area.
  • Provide scientific support at AstraZeneca sponsored educational events and plan regional medical activities during product launch processes.
  • Respond to unsolicited requests for information about unapproved AstraZeneca products or uses, ensuring objectivity, accuracy, and compliance with company policies and regulations.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with the healthcare environment and its dynamics in Saudi Arabia.
  • An established track record of driving clinical practice shaping and impactful stakeholder mobilization.
  • Advanced communication skills, both oral and written, for delivering comprehensive presentations and facilitating discussions with healthcare providers and internal stakeholders (in English).
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and solid negotiation skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound business judgment.
  • High sense of urgency and commitment to achieving objectives.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a self-directed manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience in the immunology therapy area, including stakeholder engagement and disease-area strategy.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and a track record of end-to-end project management.
  • Full understanding of the medical role in driving innovative value strategies and supporting patient access to evidence-based treatment.
  • Established track record of basic or clinical research.
