Job Description
About Lucid Motors
Lucid Motors is dedicated to creating mobility experiences through innovation, utilizing proprietary technology and software-defined vehicle architecture. The company applies a “Compromise Nothing™” approach to the global automotive market, focusing on integrating performance with sustainability, and design with engineering. This is achieved through deep vertical integration, with design, engineering, and production managed in-house across global offices and manufacturing facilities.
Role Overview
Lucid Motors is seeking a Sr. Manufacturing Test Engineer Drive Unit to join our team in King Abdullah Economic City, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position requires 5-10 years of experience and involves a lead role in developing, launching, and sustaining automated test systems for electric Drive Unit manufacturing lines. The engineer will focus on end-of-line (EOL) and in-process testing of electric motors, inverters, and integrated Drive Unit assemblies within a high-volume EV powertrain production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and approve Drive Unit test specifications and change requests from design engineering, serving as the manufacturing test authority for motor, inverter, and integrated DU validation.
- Analyze and provide feedback on test sequences, limits, cycle time, process flow, and failure-mode handling for Drive Unit EOL and sub-assembly test stations.
- Design and manage test system hardware for Drive Unit testing, including system layout, cabinet and rack design, connectorization, HV/LV routing, shielding, grounding, and thermal considerations for high-power EV components.
- Develop modular and scalable test applications with clear operator interfaces for Drive Unit testing, encompassing parameter management, test sequencing, fault messaging, and data logging.
- Implement databases to manage Drive Unit test parameters, serial-level results, traceability, and correlation to manufacturing and quality systems.
- Define DUT handling, fixturing, and electrical/mechanical interfaces for Drive Unit test stations, including HV safety interlocks and automated connection strategies.
- Lead sourcing, RFQs, supplier selection, build tracking, and technical oversight for externally supplied Drive Unit test equipment.
- Develop and execute commissioning and validation plans for Drive Unit test systems, including GR&R, red-rabbit units, fault injection, and simulation of electrical, mechanical, and communication failures.
- Launch Drive Unit test systems into production and provide on-floor support during ramp, including tuning limits, improving robustness, and reducing false fails.
- Train maintenance and operations teams on Drive Unit test station operation, error recovery, and troubleshooting.
- Partner with factory data and analytics teams to enable Drive Unit test data visualization, yield tracking, and long-term quality monitoring.
Candidate Profile
- A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in manufacturing test engineering, preferably within the EV powertrain or automotive sector.
- Demonstrated expertise in developing, launching, and sustaining automated test systems for electric motors, inverters, and integrated drive unit assemblies.
- Proficiency in designing test system hardware, including considerations for high-voltage and low-voltage routing, thermal management, and safety interlocks.
- Experience in developing test applications, managing test parameters, and implementing data logging and traceability systems.
- Ability to lead supplier engagement for test equipment and execute comprehensive commissioning and validation plans.
- Strong analytical skills for reviewing test specifications, analyzing failure modes, and optimizing test processes.
Collaboration and Environment
This role requires close collaboration with Design Engineering, Controls, Quality, Production, and external equipment suppliers to ensure the development and implementation of robust, repeatable, and data-driven test solutions. The engineer will play a critical role in maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency in Lucid’s EV powertrain production environment.
