About the Role

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Lead Design Engineer with extensive experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to join our team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position is integral to the successful design and delivery of innovative energy storage projects. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical understanding of BESS technologies and a demonstrated history of project engineering and delivery within the energy sector. This role requires a proactive individual capable of leading design efforts, ensuring technical excellence, and coordinating effectively with internal and external stakeholders to develop cost-optimized, high-performance designs that adhere to stringent quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), covering battery chemistry, duty cycling, performance metrics (Round Trip Efficiency, Cycle Life), design optimization for efficiency and reliability, battery safety, and battery inverter systems.
  • Provide technical expertise for system studies related to energy storage projects.
  • Design and optimize hybrid renewable energy systems, including Solar PV, Wind energy systems, and Battery storage.
  • Develop and implement control logic and simulations for BESS and hybrid systems.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for technical issues and propose effective solutions.
  • Contribute to value engineering initiatives and deliver cost-optimized designs that maintain high performance and reliability.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical specifications, including tender specifications, and review tender responses.
  • Conduct engineering reviews, implement quality assurance checks, and approve design drawings, reports, and project deliverables.
  • Prepare Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) specifications, develop test plans, and review/interpret test reports.
  • Ensure strict compliance with Quality and Health & Safety systems, operating in accordance with company design management procedures.
  • Provide technical advice and installation support during the construction phase of projects.
  • Coordinate daily with internal design teams, including civil engineers, instrumentation engineers, and CAD technicians.
  • Liaise and coordinate inputs from other departments and external groups such as survey/geotechnical teams, transport teams, and environmental teams.
  • Ensure all project deliverables are completed within agreed timelines and meet client scope and technical specifications.
  • Act as a primary point of contact with vendors and clients during various design phases as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven project engineering and delivery experience in energy storage projects, preferably within engineering or consulting environments.
  • Experience in performing system studies is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with MATLAB Simulink and ETAP.
  • Competence in battery system design, inverter design, and integration with MV/HV substations.
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB Script, Simulink, HOMER, and ETAP.
  • Strong understanding of control logic and simulation.
  • Knowledge of panel architecture, heat ventilation, and temperature rise calculations.
  • Strong understanding of battery inverter logics and operation modes, including VAR mode and PF mode.
  • Experience in root cause analysis and providing effective solutions.
  • Ability to develop ideas, contribute to value engineering, and deliver cost-optimized designs with high performance and reliability.
  • Capability to prepare technical specifications (including tender specifications) and review tender responses.
  • Experience in conducting engineering reviews, quality assurance checks, and approving design drawings, reports, and deliverables.
  • Ability to prepare FAT specifications, test plans, and review/interpret test reports.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ensuring full compliance with Quality and Health & Safety systems, operating within company design management procedures.
