The Opportunity: Tunnel Engineer

Parsons Corporation is seeking a Tunnel Engineer specializing in Bored Tunnels & Cavern Works to join its team in Tabuk. This full-time position is focused on providing technical and site engineering support for Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnelling and underground cavern construction activities.

Role Purpose and Scope

The Tunnel Engineer will support the delivery of bored tunnels and underground works. This involves ensuring that construction is executed in accordance with approved designs, construction methodologies, quality standards, and project safety requirements. The role requires close coordination with contractors and multidisciplinary project teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of TBM tunnelling and underground cavern construction activities.
  • Monitor TBM tunnelling operations, including segmental lining installation, backfill grouting, TBM advance, and operational performance.
  • Assist in supervising cavern excavation works using NATM, SEM, drill and blast, or other approved excavation methodologies.
  • Review construction activities to ensure compliance with IFC drawings, approved method statements, project specifications, and construction procedures.
  • Prepare and coordinate Requests for Information (RFIs) and support the resolution of technical site issues.
  • Support all phases of the TBM lifecycle, including assembly, launch, production tunnelling, breakthrough, reception, recovery, and decommissioning.
  • Assist in planning and monitoring TBM dismantling, component removal, temporary works removal, and demobilization activities.
  • Coordinate daily engineering activities with contractors, subcontractors, and construction teams.
  • Interface with Geotechnical, Survey, QA/QC, Design, and HSE teams to resolve technical issues and maintain construction progress.
  • Coordinate engineering activities across tunnels, caverns, shafts, cross-passages, and access adits.

Technical Oversight and Project Management

  • Monitor and interpret geotechnical instrumentation, settlement monitoring, tunnel convergence, and ground movement data.
  • Verify installation and quality of ground support systems, including shotcrete, rock bolts, steel ribs, waterproofing systems, and segmental tunnel linings.
  • Identify unexpected ground conditions and support reporting in accordance with project Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) requirements.
  • Monitor TBM advance rates, cavern excavation progress, and construction productivity.
  • Support short-term planning, look-ahead schedules, progress reporting, and construction performance reviews.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly engineering and construction progress reports.
  • Promote compliance with project Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) requirements and Life-Saving Rules.
  • Monitor high-risk underground activities, including confined space entry, lifting operations, TBM works, and underground construction activities.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation.
  • Support QA/QC inspections for tunnel linings, waterproofing systems, shotcrete application, and permanent support installations.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, inspection reports, site diaries, and construction documentation.
  • Assist in preparing as-built records, handover documentation, and project closeout deliverables.
  • Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as appropriate.

Experience Requirements

Candidates for this position should possess 5 to 10 years of experience in relevant tunnelling and underground construction projects.

Work Environment

This full-time role is based in Tabuk.
