About the HYCO Operator Role

Air Products, a global leader in industrial gases founded in 1940, is seeking a motivated HYCO Operator to join its operations in Jubail, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position is integral to the daily functioning of Air Products Qudra (APQ) facilities, which encompass a Hydrogen Steam Methane Reformer, CO2 Removal Unit & Compression, Auxiliary PSA, Membrane Unit, and associated utilities and pipeline network. The role is responsible for ensuring production targets are met safely and efficiently, reporting to the HYCO Lead/Shift Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities and Operational Duties

The HYCO Operator will maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all company and industry safety processes, including the proper documentation of safety-related activities. Responsibilities include operating the HYCO Steam Methane Reformer, CO2 recovery units, and ancillary equipment, such as water treatment units, in accordance with established Work Instruction Procedures. The operator will also manage the pipeline network to supply hydrogen, steam, and CO2 to customers, and oversee oxygen and nitrogen pipeline products as part of the operational team. This role involves providing operational support and guidance during plant commissioning, maintaining accurate document control, and monitoring quality assurance initiatives. The operator will ensure the safety, reliability, and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, and controls, while managing plant production efficiently to meet safety, reliability, and profitability targets. Reporting shift production progress and plant status to the Shift Supervisor, the operator will also propose operational solutions for any shortfalls. Compliance with process safety, Management of Change (MOC), and Operating Procedures and Health Requirements (OPHR) regulations is essential, as is ensuring environmental and regulatory requirements are met.

Safety and Compliance Management

A core aspect of this role is ensuring the safety of all personnel through the APQ Basic Safety Practice program, which includes Safety Work Permits, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and Confined Space procedures. Active participation in executing, organizing, and auditing these practices is expected to foster Air Products' safety culture. The operator must ensure that Air Products and APQ standards, along with global best practices for Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), productivity, reliability, quality, and customer service, are upheld. Adherence to Site Work Instruction Manuals for all relevant equipment units and operating procedures is required to meet customer satisfaction regarding safety, reliability, product quality, and supply flexibility, all while complying with contractual obligations.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

The HYCO Operator will support and maintain close working relationships with engineering and maintenance personnel to continuously monitor and evaluate plant systems and equipment through a Plant Process Advisory Model. This includes executing scheduled preventive maintenance activities and coordinating corrective maintenance to optimize activities during plant shutdowns and avoid business interruptions. The role also involves providing operations support and participating in investigations and Root Cause Analysis to identify and implement sustainable corrective actions. Facilitating operational excellence and customer satisfaction through productivity, reliability, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives is a key objective. Maintaining customer communications and relationships at the 'board' level, ensuring customer demand rates are satisfied while maximizing facility efficiency and profitability, is also required.

Qualifications and Experience

A Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Chemical Process Operations is preferred. An Associate Technical Degree (2-year certificate) will be considered based on demonstrated years of experience and competence. A minimum of 5 years of plant operations experience is required, with demonstrated knowledge of Hydrogen/SMR/acid gas removal units production plants being a significant advantage. Operators are expected to achieve 'Level 1 / Board Level' status within 2 to 4 years, with evaluations conducted during the training period. Demonstrated interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to employee involvement, team building, and diversity are necessary. The ability to communicate effectively between operations and maintenance teams, and with customers at the board level on a daily basis, is essential. Proficiency in English speaking and writing is required.
