Job Description

About the Role

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Coordinator Power System Study Engineer to join our team in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This full-time position requires 5-10 years of experience in power system studies, particularly for substations and grid integration studies for Renewable Power Plants. The ideal candidate will possess profound knowledge of renewable generation technologies, HVDC, and FACTS systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct Grid Integration Studies, including transient and steady-state stability, voltage stability, harmonic, power quality, LVRT (Low Voltage Ride Through), and Fault Ride Through studies.
  • Perform Short Circuit Analysis for sizing switchgear and circuit breakers, and Arc Flash Analysis as per international standards.
  • Execute Insulation Coordination Studies such as cable, transformer, and reactor energization, TRV (Transient Recovery Voltage), direct and indirect lightning strike, very fast transient overvoltage (GIS) using PSCD or similar, switching, power oscillation damping, and Sub-Synchronous Resonance studies.
  • Undertake Ferro-resonance Studies associated with transformers and EHV cables, and Secondary Arc Current Extinction Studies for successful auto-reclosure.
  • Select Surge Arrester Duty based on residual voltage and energy level.
  • Focus on Renewable Energy Systems (RES) by conducting load flow studies, identifying reactive power elements, modeling RES (Solar, BESS & Wind), assessing operational challenges, and verifying grid code compliance before energization.
  • Perform Industrial Studies, including motor acceleration and re-acceleration studies as per process requirements for motor grouping.

Required Expertise and Standards

  • Thorough familiarity with IEC, IEEE, DEP, and other relevant industrial standards.
  • Ability to conduct detailed analysis of available technological solutions in the market for performing system studies.
  • Capability to assume typical input data parameters for each study as per project specifications and standards when actual input data/parameters are not available.
  • Strong knowledge and interpretation of various country-specific Grid Codes, with a preference for requirements related to the Middle East region.
  • Proficiency in identifying potential issues and challenges that may arise during grid integration and suggesting effective solutions.
  • Skill in providing various optimization possibilities along with compliance to Grid Code requirements.

Essential Software Proficiency

  • CYME
  • MATLAB
  • Mipower
  • EMTP-RV
  • CDEGS
  • AVEVA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the design of power generation mix for microgrids and battery storage systems.
  • Proficiency in protection relay selection and coordination studies (overcurrent/earth fault, unit protection, distance protection, motor protection, generator protection, and grid tie-in).
  • Experience in modeling Phase Shifting Transformers.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling customers and Utilities/Off-takers related to the approval of Grid impact studies.
  • Involvement in HVDC and STATCOM projects, including Electromagnetic Field (Compatibility) studies.
