About the Role

alfanar is seeking a Data Lake Platform Manager to join its team in Riyadh. This full-time role is critical for ensuring the data lake platform is stable, secure, scalable, and cost-efficient, providing reliable access to data for analytics, reporting, and data science initiatives. The successful candidate will have 5-10 years of experience and will be responsible for maintaining platform performance and governance, while fostering continuous improvement and collaboration across technical and business teams.

Key Platform Operations

The Data Lake Platform Manager will oversee the daily operations and management of the data lake platform, ensuring its robust performance and availability. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing day-to-day operations of the data lake platform across cloud or on-premises environments.
  • Ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance of data storage and processing services.
  • Monitoring platform health, identifying issues, and leading resolution efforts.
  • Overseeing compute, storage, and pipeline resource utilization.

Performance Optimization and Data Governance

A core aspect of this role involves optimizing platform performance and costs, alongside establishing and enforcing stringent data governance and security measures:

  • Monitoring system performance, usage trends, and capacity requirements.
  • Optimizing infrastructure costs across storage and compute resources.
  • Identifying performance bottlenecks and implementing corrective improvements.
  • Ensuring the scalability of the platform to support growing data volumes and workloads.
  • Enforcing data access controls, security policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Implementing and maintaining data lifecycle management policies (retention, archiving, deletion).
  • Supporting internal and external audit requirements and ensuring secure handling of sensitive and regulated data.

Platform Evolution and Stakeholder Support

The Manager will drive platform development and provide essential support to users, ensuring the data ecosystem evolves effectively and remains accessible:

  • Coordinating platform upgrades, patches, and feature enhancements.
  • Collaborating with engineering teams on infrastructure and architecture improvements.
  • Managing the integration of new tools and services into the data ecosystem.
  • Ensuring controlled and low-risk deployment of platform changes.
  • Supporting data engineers, analysts, and data scientists using the platform.
  • Troubleshooting platform, pipeline, and data access issues.
  • Improving the usability, discoverability, and accessibility of data assets.
  • Acting as an escalation point for platform-related incidents and requests.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Documentation

Effective monitoring and clear communication are vital for this role, encompassing:

  • Defining and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) for platform health, cost, and usage.
  • Providing regular reporting to leadership on platform performance and risks.
  • Maintaining operational documentation and standards for platform usage.
  • Recommending improvements based on monitoring insights.

Leadership and Organizational Impact

Beyond technical responsibilities, the Data Lake Platform Manager is expected to demonstrate strong leadership and contribute significantly to organizational development and operational excellence:

  • HR Proficiency: Recruit, cultivate, and recognize high performers, manage low performers, ensure fair treatment, and base assessments on performance to achieve planned results, supported by a delegation of authority matrix.
  • Responsibility & Delivery: Take full responsibility for operations, anticipate problems proactively, make timely decisions, and deliver required results with quality and cost efficiency.
  • Business Planning & Performance: Translate corporate goals into business plans, monitor performance, initiate corrective actions, provide progress reports, and control budgets for optimum cost efficiency.
  • Organizational Development & Process Improvement: Develop organizational structures, ensure job descriptions are available, and drive business process improvements through well-defined systems, policies, procedures, and automation.
