Job Description

About the Role

Chronicle Heritage Arabia (CH Arabia) is establishing an on-call roster for Field Archaeologists across all experience levels. These contract positions will support a growing portfolio of survey, excavation, and monitoring projects throughout the GCC, including engagements with major giga-project and heritage clients. The roles are based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and require individuals who are either currently located in the GCC or able to travel to the region for extended periods of fieldwork.

Field Roles Available

CH Arabia is recruiting for a range of field roles, offering flexible engagement options such as day-rate, fixed-term project contracts, or freelance/sub-contractor arrangements. These roles provide opportunities to work on significant heritage and giga-project sites within the region.

  • Staff Archaeologist: Focuses on entry to mid-level fieldwork, including excavation, survey, monitoring, and recording under supervision.
  • Associate Archaeologist: Leads field teams, manages daily excavation/survey operations, and ensures adherence to recording standards and site safety protocols.
  • Senior Archaeologist: Manages field components of projects as a Project Archaeologist and acts as Field Director. This role involves liaising with the Project Management Office (PMO) and clients on delivery, quality, and schedule, while providing technical oversight to field teams.
  • Archaeological Surveyor: Conducts topographic, geophysical, and GPS/GIS-based survey work to support excavation planning, site mapping, and spatial recording.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A degree in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management, or a related field. The level of qualification and experience will be aligned with the specific role.
  • Practical field experience in excavation, survey, and/or heritage monitoring.
  • Willingness and ability to work across the GCC for extended field seasons, often in remote or desert environments.
  • Demonstrated strong recording, documentation, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-national team and adapt to local cultural and regulatory contexts across GCC markets.

Work Environment and Engagement

This role involves working on project-based assignments across the GCC. CH Arabia offers flexible engagement options to accommodate individual availability, including day-rate, fixed-term project contracts, or freelance/sub-contractor arrangements. Successful candidates may find a path into ongoing project work as CH Arabia's project pipeline expands.

Application Information

CH Arabia welcomes applicants from all locations who are legally able to work in Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries. Work visas will be provided as necessary. Individuals seeking their next deployment as an experienced field archaeologist or a standing relationship with a major heritage consultancy are encouraged to apply.
